Initiated through volunteer-driven effort, an educational program; a publicity campaign, including a best-seller official history; a travelling museum; and, a permanent memorial near the site of the battle was constructed and opened to the public in 2017. This parcel of land features an obelisk, an amphitheater, interconnecting trails, adjacent agricultural land, as well as a near-by Commonwealth War Graves cemetery that was started by Canadians in July 1917. Canada’s victory at Hill 70, virtually forgotten for many years, came with a terrible price.

The story of the Canadian experience in World War 1 is told through the experiences of the soldiers who fought at Hill 70.

The grassed areas are planted with a mix of wild flowers native to the region of Pas de Calais. But Vimy Ridge was a British battle, albeit using overwhelming numbers of Canadian soldiers, under British commanders. The Hill 70 project team raised more than $8.5 million over the past decade to complete the park.

The  Project Team, with the support of the citizens of Loos, secured a prominent location just inside the Canadian front lines of August 1917 and next to a Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. Although very much on a par with the earlier action at Vimy Ridge, the battle of Hill 70, conducted primarily by Canadian troops, and under sole Canadian command, is not recognized formally as a significant event in Canadian history.
