Eventually the path emerges back on the outward route and a left turn would cut the route short here; however to continue the figure-of-eight, turn right to again follow the zig-zag path downhill back to the Rotten Calder. After passing under the General's Bridge at Stoneymeadow, the Water flows by Crossbasket Castle (House) in an easterly direction, and on through the former estates of Greenhall and Milheugh where the valley is seen to give way to wide flood plains. The river begins as the Calder Water or 'Park Burn', formed from various burns around Auldhouse which drain from the Eldrig Hills. It is 28 miles (45 km) long, rising at Hirst Hill in Lanarkshire near Shotts and running through West Lothian, draining into the Firth of Forth at Cramond, Edinburgh.

The complex of buildings is situated on the precipitous bank of the Rotten Calder Water, overlooking a meander named the School Bend. The river flows by the north side of Blantyre before joining the River Clyde opposite Daldowie. Soon keep left at a fork; the path descends in a series of zig-zags through rhododedron bushes to emerge on the banks of the Rotten Calder.

It was replaced by an extension to a large 18th-century country house called Calderwood House, which has itself since been demolished along with a later 1840s Gothic Revival addition. Calderglen Country Park is a country park in the Scottish town of East Kilbride. St Leonards is an area of the Scottish new town East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire. At a signpost turn left again to follow a path that heads back to the play area. Otter, roe deer and European green woodpecker can be seen in the southern reaches of the park. Buzzards can be seen hunting over open areas by the river and the grey heron, grey wagtail and dipper are common sights too.
