When I started, I still had several sections of shade, but on the descent, there was no shade at all. The views of mighty Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake, gives many mountains here a feeling of grandeur far beyond what their size would indicate. 17,240 views. It's about 1,300 feet above sea level, rising around 600 feet above the surrounding area. Be sure to start this hike early if you want any shade.

Alternate Route Parking. A nice long steady incline the whole way on a fire road. The AllTrails app says it is 7.4 miles, but my app clocked it at 8.5 from the car to the peak and back! The first mile is a little hard but easy after that. Nice rewarding views at the top! Be prepared for rough and slippery surfaces, especially on ledge rock. Some shade in the morning, but barely any on the way down.

I only encountered bugs 2 miles into the hike and towards the top. Fire road. It’s more about 8.3. To get to the trailhead coming from Grand Marais, drive northeast on highway 61 until you come to Grand Portage Village. Trail is basically hiking on a fire road.

After the first mile, stunning views the entire hike.

Easy parking, easy trail, nice fire road. This hike is pretty basic, but still fun. I would avoid on hot days as it is quite exposed.

Alternate Route. Nice wide trail with nice views, not too steep but could hear the cars from the lower road. And no mountain shows off this Great Lake better than Mount Josephine.

This hike is completely exposed with minimal pockets of shade, so I’d recommend starting very early on warmer days—we didn’t get there til after 9am today and the sun was brutal both directions.

Wide trail.

I stared hiking around 6:00 pm and got there right on time for the sunset that was amazing by the way , the mileage is inaccurate I marked 8.6 miles out and back , the trail is easy to follow , like the fact that the trail is pretty wide , on my hiked back it was already night and you can see the LA lights all the way down , I would recommend to get headlights if you go for the sunset the way back in the night could be a little bit scary , overall it’s a good hike , great for beginners . Had to watch and wait for one to finish it’s lizard meal to get off the trail. not bad.
