The Salamander Trail felt a lot longer than the .7 miles to the top, but maybe that was it was our last trail after a full day of hiking. It was about 58 degrees when I reached the Hawksbill Gap parking area but the temperature was slowly dropping.

We were able to enjoy a snack on some of the rocks and be far from the edge. Whether you go in the spring, summer, or dead of winter, it is always beautiful and always an adventure. However, the whipping wind and cold temperatures were worth it because we had the entire outlook to ourselves for the whole time we were enjoying the sunset. This is also a great place to view and photography birds riding the thermals. Unfortunately we had to keep rescheduling because of all the rain we've been having, but thankfully we were finally able to nail down a beautiful afternoon to hike up and watch the sun sink below the horizon. Peaceful yes, but boring.

This moderate hike is located at MP 45.6 on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, so you'll have to pay a $20 entrance fee (valid for 7 days) per car to enter the park if you don't have an annual pass. We took the shortest route - about 45 minutes up and 30 back down.
The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Watching a sunset from the top of a mountain, breathless after a steep climb, offers tremendous reward for your efforts.

If you're looking for a good hike in Shenandoah to catch a sunset I definitely recommend Hawksbill Mountain!

I’ve read that it is a 1.5-mile round-trip hike 2 miles, and even 2.5 miles to the summit of Hawksbill Mountain. Definitely go right first for the slow climb, coming down it was steep the whole way so I wouldn't want to climb up that way. The only thing I regret is not bringing up a warm thermos of tea with me but I had no idea it was going to be so dang cold. That said, the view is so worth it so keep pushing!! At the top we were lucky enough to have clear skies and a beautiful valley view.

Once done admiring the view, simply retrace your steps back down to the car to complete the 1.7 mile round trip hike.
