Just stay on the AT southbound as it ascends and descends Peak 1326 and Tomblin Hill (1,220+ feet), and then finally ascends Buzzard Hill, crossing pleasant streams along the way. I felt bad if I landed on any animals, but my back may have felt even worse the next day! The view from the top is partially blocked by pine trees. 3D Nice easy hike, waterfall was definitely the highlight. Be careful, because the rocks get slippery when wet, and we almost had an incident where I fell into the creek. Water was in them for my dogs. The historic stone mansion sits on 66 acres and is 150 yards from the AT and a beautiful, westward-facing overlook of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. This is not a casual hike for a day trip. The rocky summit of Buzzard’s Roost offers spectacular views of the surrounding Black Hills. Again there is not sign but you go straight across and a little to the right.

***Meetup at Centreville Park and Ride to form carpools and then we drive to the trail-head. Stone cabin ruin along the way. Buzzard Hill offers some decent views to the west of the surrounding ridges and out onto the Shenandoah Valley.

The trail gets rockier and the trees get progressively smaller as you climb. You won't see any signs of urbanization from up on this peak. I am training for a long-distance hike where I am expecting ~3k ft of elevation change daily, and I felt like this was good preparation for that, but I didn't find the views outstanding. Overall, a good training hike. From the parking area head up the dirt road towards the house where you turn left on the blue blazed nature trail just before the stone gates. FYI, for a bonus 1.5 mile and 400 ft elevation gain, you can also start at the lot on route 7, immediately on the right before driving up to the lot at Bears Den. If you’re looking for the waterfall, it’s about 3/4 mile in from the start of the hike. Stick with this one for the easiest and quickest way to the top, or branch off to the right for the more challenging Sun Up or Sun Down trails.

It says it is 2 miles but is more around 2.5.

The hardest part was about an hour into the hike, where you climb about 550 feet in about 20 minutes. Nice view at the top! The views are better at the overlook, but if you don’t stand on this boulder, you did not climb Buzzard Hill!

Finding hiking hideaways with waterfalls can feel like grabbing your own heavenly oasis. Multiple photo opportunities here. This trail doesn’t look very promising at first, passing by some unattractive pipeline service hatches, but it soon enters a superb redwood grove and winds among huge trees, with views of more huge trees (actually the Redwood Loop area) across the creek. This hike is the the sister hike of Raven Rocks. A gnarly old tree at the outcrop also serves as a landmark. Nice stop at the waterfall and a nice overlook at the top. Bears Den is owned by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and operated by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from July until December.

The chance to view wild flowers, and water fauna are ever present in this hike. This hike is not easy and if you do not have a way to filter water, you better bring 2 -3 liters for each person when the weather is hot. Last climb to the ridgeline, small rocky garden - watch your stepping here. Walk into the woods and almost immediately turn left at the first intersection with the Redwood Loop.

It bears mentioning that there is another Buzzard’s Roost in Spearfish Canyon, but that refers to the overlook at the top of the ’76 Trail. Falls are pretty, rock outcropping at top is good for a quick stop.
