The main purpose of the learning support therapist is to assess where the learner is failing to make adequate progress in the main areas of learning. Literacy and numeracy areas are targeted. Areas such as phonics, higher order language and extension may also be targeted in therapy. Therapy is provided in small group and one-to-one sessions. The learning support therapist will assess learners using standardised assessments and provide feedback to the teacher to aid curriculum planning. The Learning Support Therapist normally forms part of a multiprofessional team and has to attend team meeting and complete all required documentations.

Within the context of a remedial school,  an Occupational Therapist provides targeted therapeutic intervention for learners who experience challenges in sensory integration, motor challenges (gross and fine) which may result in difficulties with planning, motor control, bilateral integration, crossing the midline and concentration and attention difficulties. The occupational therapist also deals with the development of visual perception (spatial aspects, visual closure, sequencing, form constancy, visual discrimination, figure ground) elements all of which will impact on the child’s ability to successfully cope with academic tasks. The Occupational Therapist contributes to the multi-disciplinary planning process aimed at supporting the child holistically.

A speech therapist provides targeted therapeutic intervention to facilitate learner participation and speech and language performance within the school environment.

Work with learners who experience challenges in communication. These challenges may fall into any of the following areas of speech, language (and the various levels associated within this area) which may involve oral, written, receptive and expressive language and / or the auditory processing areas. Since language is strongly associated with cognition and academic achievement, there is a strong focus in the attainment of skills in the above mentioned areas.

A speech therapist conducts speech and language therapy assessments (as determined by management, based on the school’s need and what is in the best interest of the learners) on all learners allocated to the therapist for the year (through a variety of functional, standardised and non-standardised assessments and skilled observation, checklists etc), track performance (improvement, areas of concern etc). In addition, they evaluate a learner’s performance in activities that relate to classroom functioning and act as part of a multi-disciplinary team, sharing knowledge and inviting collaboration.

Mathematics Teacher (High School)
