If no bar is shown, it means the area has no LSOAs among the 10 per cent most deprived. It is a combined measure of deprivation based on a total of 37 separate indicators that have been grouped into seven domains, each of which reflects a different aspect of deprivation experienced by individuals living in an area.

for that LSOA.

Similarly, it is calculated at the output area level. This score is used to rank all the LSOAs in England from the most deprived to the least deprived, allowing users to identify how deprived areas are relative to others. The IMD is a measure of deprivation, which the government defines separately to poverty. The Indices show London remains an area of mixed fortunes, with some wealthier areas alongside pockets of deprivation across the capital.

As an indicator, the IMD/Indices of Deprivation are not able to provide information specifically about lack of financial resources and also give no absolute measures.

Again, the score, 6.8, represents the actual proportion of the population aged 60 and over who were income deprived.

The scores are calculated from thirty-nine indicators grouped under seven different domains or themes, each measuring a different type of deprivation to produce an overall indicator, the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). The English Indices of Deprivation 2019 (the Indices) is the sixth release in a series of statistics produced by MHCLG, first published in 2000. Polarised areas will therefore appear to be more deprived than when using a measure based on average ranks. Indeed, the barriers to services domain may understate London’s deprivation as it uses geographic distance to services rather than availability (for example GP or schools places availability).
