Wendy (the spunky and intuitive Karina Fontes) saunters into view without a care in the world, completely oblivious to the nightmare that Benjamin is building for her. I know she’s a novice in the park ranger world, but really… I’m impressed she even managed to get to work without sustaining a life-threatening injury, such is the low level of her everyday competence. The main character was the dumbest I have seen ever in a movie. I think it’s supposed to be depicting Wendy’s imagination being as much a threat to her, as anything tangible. He will talk your ear off about James Bond movies, Doctor Who, Zelda, and Star Trek.

To help out a colleague, she takes on a more strenuous task, only to find herself lost in the great outdoors, as darkness approaches. Yes, this could have been better, but it is still worth your time. Fontes’ performance gracefully walks the line between idiocy and helplessness, and always manages to land on the right side that each moment requires. Wendy is one of the least qualified to do the job and so stays off the more complex trails, until one day, challenged by friends, she takes the sign hanging job and goes off, proceeding to get totally lost and finding a dead body lying in the woods. At the same time, however, Benjamin, working from her own screenplay, never allows her audience to get too comfortable. And actually very little happens until the obvious dream sequences (not very inventive or gripping) and all of it is downright boring. I think, just like those film’s directors, Brighton Rock‘s director/writer, Roxanne Benjamin, is going to be coming up big in the genre and out of it as well. It’s not the lead actress’s fault, but she is left to bear [pun not intended] the burden of almost the entire film by herself. If it doesn’t always feel as though Benjamin has the tightest grasp on her film’s tone, perhaps that’s because she nails it so well right out of the gate. Some of the reviewers said they couldn't get past the first few minutes and I can't say I don't understand why.
