Bear Den is on a low section of the range and the summit is actually outside the park, despite the hike starting on Skyline Drive. Hiking in the summer and fall is also nice, however the weather can be a little harsh at times. Hike to the top: Hiking to the top of Bears Den is great in the spring and fall as the colors of the valley really start to show and make sunsets here especially beautiful. Benches are located along the way if you need a break, and a final set of steps leads you up to the flat top of the “hump”. The devastation of the forest fire of 2018 is still very apparent but so is the regrowth. Really cool view of Whiteface. The parking lot is also a great jumping off point for multi-day hikes south along the Appalachian Trail and there are also multiple campsites and a trail center at the top for those wishing to plan an overnight trip. The trailhead is still closed at the beginning of Whiteface ski parking just before the river. Blue Hill Farm was built in 1895 and has been restored to a working farm. Follow the path in and park at the roundabout next to the beautifully carved bears in the tree. When you arrive at the location you will see numerous spots along the side of the road to park. Great view of Whiteface! It is likely to be busy, especially at peak periods. My watch measured it at 3.8 round trip.
